In the movie ‘Inception’, Leonardi Di Caprio and Ellen Page attempt to navigate a dream-like world similar to ours, however it’s composed of illusion and deception. It becomes apparent how difficult this is, as they have a tough time trying to distinguish between reality and the dream-world. Those familiar with the history of philosophy will see a striking analogy to the age-old problem of external-world skepticism: How do we really know that what’s out there is actually there and that we’re not in a state of perpetual deception?
We need not go very far to see how eerily similar our world and our nation are in comparison to this. We’re constantly confronted by a barrage of half-truths, concerns over fake news, and a general worry over what truly is real and what can be trusted. We’re too familiar with how easy it is for the human condition to create an atmosphere of confusion and fear. As the movie Inception continues on, we learn that there is a way for the people in the movie to determine what is real and isn’t: a spinning top. In the dream-world, the spinning top will keep spinning without falling over. If the person isn’t dreaming and they’re experiencing true reality, the top will fall over. In our world of confusion, information, and sensation, where is our top? How do we distinguish fact from fiction? Where do we turn? Scripture is clear here: our spinning top is Christ himself. James 1:5 tells us, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him”.
There’s knowledge, and then there’s wisdom. I may have knowledge of something being true or something I’m hearing about in the world around me, but this doesn’t mean I have wisdom on how to use that knowledge, how to respond, or whether I should respond at all! God promises all of us that if we need that clarity, if we’re feeling overwhelmed, to run to Him and He will make our paths straight. Be encouraged today that despite calamity, fears, and trials that the same Jesus who said “I am the way, truth, and the life” will see you through. Reach out to Him.
